Mon Glucko - Diabète

Historical

The first observations date back to 4000 BC. It was in China that we began to talk about sweet urine or honey urine. It will then be found in Egyptian Papyri. It is one of the most documented diseases in the field of medicine. Diabetes was then characterized by intense thirst, associated with an abundant desire to urinate, excessive hunger and a sweet taste of urine. A whole story

When does diabetes come?

Diabetes occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin. It is an autoimmune disease. Type 2 or non-insulin-dependent diabetes most often occurs around the age of 40 in adults.

Discovery of insulin?

Insulin was discovered in 1921 by Frederick Banting and his assistant Charles Best, under the supervision of physiologist John Macleod at the University of Toronto, Canada. Biochemist James Collip also helped refine the extraction of insulin, making its use possible in humans.
Before this discovery, people with type 1 diabetes did not have many treatment options and life expectancy was very short. The discovery of insulin marked a revolution in the treatment of diabetes, allowing people with the disease to live longer and healthier lives.
In 1923, Banting and Macleod were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine for their work on insulin.
